There’s rarely a love more pure than your animal pal. Make the most of your journey to Mexico by bringing your dog or cat.

Let us help you make crossing the border into Mexico a smooth experience for the furrier members of your family. Here’s everything you need to know to safely bring your pets into Mexico.

Bringing Your Pet To Mexico

What’s an exciting adventure to Mexico without your best friend? Fortunately, the Mexican government allows you to bring your pet to Mexico.

You’ll want to be sure you have all your pet’s required documentation to avoid being turned around at the border.

It’s important to note that Mexican regulations only identify cats and dogs as pets. They also only allow a maximum of two pets when traveling by car and one pet when entering by plane.

Documentation

In order to bring your pet to Mexico, you must have the proper documentation. This includes:

When you arrive in Mexico, the SAGARPA-SENASICA (Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries, and Food) may perform a quick health examination of your pet to ensure it is in compliance with the documentation you’ve provided.

Traveling by Car

As mentioned above, you may bring up to two pets to Mexico via your vehicle. This is easily the most convenient way to enter Mexico with your pet.

Be sure to bring a carrier to secure your pet as you cross the border. Also, you may want to have a copy of your documentation, as you may need it when you return to the USA

Traveling by Plane

Each airline has its own set of regulations regarding bringing a pet to Mexico. Some prohibit the voyages of fluffy friends. Others require that your pet is kept in a carrier in which it can stand, lie down, and turn around.

This carrier must be sized to fit under the seat in front of you. Your pet must stay in its carrier for the duration of the flight. Typically, giving your pet food and drink during the flight is prohibited.

Be sure to research airline regulations to ensure your pet enjoys a safe and comfortable trip to Mexico.

Bringing Pet Food & Treats

We understand that many pets are finicky when it comes to food. You may want to bring your pet’s favorite food and treats.

Pet food that is allowed across the Mexican border includes dry and wet food as long as it’s packaged and labeled.

Have Fun with Fido

Traveling doesn’t have to mean boarding your pet. Enjoy frolicking on the beaches with your dog or snuggling into your cabana with your cat.
